Missy Elliott keeps the gridiron spirit alive in a new single, “Pep Rally”
Missy Elliott’s return to the musical spotlight continues apace: Timing the release to both the general spirit of football-induced enthusiasm and her appearance in a new commercial for Amazon’s Echo speaker system, last night Elliott dropped a new track, “Pep Rally.” Featuring marching-band beats and the repetitive vocal stylings of New Orleans bounce— “this my new Bounce “PepRally” get u right 4the game where my Clappers,” Elliott tweeted yesterday—the song makes several references to football and the “Big Game,” with Elliott exhorting listeners to “get cracking like we up at the Super Bowl.” It’s an upbeat, toe-tapping track, one that begs the question of why they don’t just get Missy Elliott to do the halftime show every year.
