Here’s the first teaser trailer for Moana 2

Just how far will Moana go? The generic marketing answer for the upcoming Moana 2 is “Further than ever before!” It’s unclear just how different this sequel adventure is from the fantastical journey Moana took in the original movie. But a new trailer for the film, which premieres on November 27, teases a brand new direction to set sail alongside our heroine (Auli‘i Cravalho) and her demigod pal Maui (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson).

Moana 2 “reunites Moana and Maui three years later for an expansive new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers,” reads a synopsis for the film. “After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.” In the teaser trailer—which hints at a new cast of characters and some fantastical ocean creatures—Moana reveals the mission bestowed by her ancestors: “To sail to new skies and reconnect our people across the entire ocean.”

The Moana sequel was originally conceived as a television show for Disney+ before it was reconfigured as a theatrical release that will compete in cinemas against the Wicked musical adaptation. This animated movie is also a musical, though this installment has traded in the Oscar-nominated Lin Manuel Miranda soundtrack for music by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear (the duo behind the TikTok-popular Bridgerton musical), Opetaia Foaʻi, and Mark Mancina. Moana 2 is directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller.

In addition to the sequel, Disney is also developing a live-action Moana set to premiere in 2026. Johnson will reprise the role of Maui in that film as well, and Miranda will return to pen new music for the movie helmed by his Hamilton director Thomas Kail. The announcement of a live-action remake just 10 years after the original always seemed too soon, but it feels like a particular Moana overload in light of a sequel premiering in theaters two years before. But the people (or their kids) love Moana: it was the top-streamed movie of 2023, despite being seven years old.

And as for the upcoming sequel, “It’s very exciting. I can’t wait for fans to see the film, the technology, the effects, cutting edge,” Johnson told Entertainment Tonight earlier this year. “We all really went for it. We thought if we’re gonna make a sequel to something so beloved, let’s really go for it.” He added: “You also have the benefit and the beauty of the ocean. In Moana… the ocean is alive, so when the ocean has a heartbeat and a pulse, that’s just a whole different thing. I can’t wait. All new music, which, we’re excited.”
