Moonlight and Manchester cleaned up with the National Society Of Film Critics

Tomorrow night, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association will gather to treat Hollywood’s glittering stars to an evening of shiny trophies and Jimmy Fallon, in the form of the 74th Annual Golden Globes. (FYI: You can hang out with us right here as we live blog the awards starting at 7:50 p.m. Eastern.) But some of the nation’s top film critics have already weighed in on their favorite movies of the year, with the National Society Of Film Critics voting on its annual film awards earlier today.

Unsurprisingly—given their status as consistent critical darlings—the big winners this year were Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight and Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester By The Sea. Moonlight did especially well, with Jenkins bringing home Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, and a Best Supporting Actor award for Mahershala Ali with his tale of a young man coming of age in the shadow of the War On Drugs. Manchester, meanwhile, picked up pretty much everything else, with Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams snagging Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress, respectively, while writer-director Lonergan earned a nod for Best Screenplay.

In fact, two of the only awards that weren’t grabbed by our two favorite movies of the year were ones they weren’t eligible for: Best Foreign Language Film—which went to the much-touted German comedy Toni Erdmannand Best Non-Fiction film, which was awarded to ESPN’s O.J.: Made In America. Meanwhile, Isabelle Hupert was awarded Best Actress, in recognition for her work in Elle and Things To Come.
