Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight was one of The A.V. Club’s favorite movies of 2016, painting a rich coming-of-age portrait of a young black kid from Miami coming to terms with his identity. It also set the record for lowest-budgeted Best Picture winner in Academy Awards history. Helping to bring Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney’s vision to life was production designer Hannah Beachler. In the video above, Beachler discusses how she designed an Oscar-winning look with a limited budget.
