More TV news: Parenthood renewed for a second season, Friday Night Lights' Kyle Chandler may run with the dinosaurs

It’s not often that a “multilayered series” is given much of a chance at NBC—especially not one as quiet and genial as Parenthood, and especially not when it comes from Friday Night Lights showrunner Jason Katims—so it’s somewhat encouraging to see that the network picked up Parenthood for a second season today, rewarding its solid (though unspectacular) ratings and general critical approval. (NBC cites its popularity with "upscale audiences" as a factor, as a good chunk of its viewership comes from the coveted $100,000+ income demographic.) It’s also good news for anyone who’s been hesitant about watching the show for fear it’ll just be canceled the second you let yourself care about. As for the rest of you holdouts: Dax Shepard isn’t that bad, really, and Lauren Graham can do no wrong.

Speaking of Friday Night Lights: With the show likely ending after its fifth season (shooting now), Entertainment Weekly is reporting that star Kyle "Coach Taylor" Chandler is close to signing on as the lead in Terra Nova, a sci-fi series from Steven Spielberg and Peter Chernin. Should he accept, Chandler would star as the patriarch of a “futuristic family that travels back to a time when dinosaurs roamed free,” where Chandler will presumably offer the dinosaurs many a terse-but-kindhearted berating until they learn how to evolve.
