Movie news: Coens, Cannes

The American presence at this year's Cannes Film Festival is sure to elicit discreet little gasps from the locals. Five of this year's 21 competition films are from the U.S.: Zodiac, No Country For Old Men, Death Proof, We Own The Night, and Paranoid Park. Three of the filmmakers involved have won the festival's Palme d'Or award in previous years: Quentin Tarantino, Gus Van Sant, and the Coen brothers. (Variety)

Speaking of the Coens, Brad Pitt will star in their newest, Burn After Reading, alongside George Clooney. The Coens' high-profile casting upgrades have earned them a range of results, but the cast should still attract old-time Coens fans, thanks to Frances McDormand (also Joel Coen's wife). (Reuters)
