MTV has a lot of holes to fill in its schedule, especially since it doesn’t play music videos anymore—a tired joke that has now gone on longer than the period of time in which MTV actually played music videos—so, according to Deadline, it has picked up a bunch of new shows that are all created by and/or targeted to female viewers. Take that, patriarchy.
Three of the new shows are scripted, and one—Ladylike—is a hidden camera show from the creators of the network’s Girl Code. We don’t really know what Ladylike will be like, but the official description says it will be a prank show that tries to “redefine what it means to be ‘ladylike’” and “challenge societal norms and unleash uncompromising and ridiculous situations on the unsuspecting public.” Ladylike will be hosted by Nicole Byer, Jade Catta-Preta, Matteo Lane, and Blair Socci.
Byer is also developing one of the scripted shows, and her untitled project will reportedly be about a “young adult” who gets kicked out of her New York City apartment after starting a fire and is forced to move in with her sister’s family in the suburbs. The second scripted show, an untitled project from Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont, is about a pair of girls living in Los Angeles who develop a successful weed-delivery app of some kind. Those two sound like the sort of thing you’d expect to see on MTV these days, but the third, Little Darlings, shakes things up a bit: It’s a “dark half-hour comedy” about two women “kicking literal ass on their college campus,” meaning it’s basically an MTV take on street-level superhero shows like Arrow. The official description even refers to one of the girls as a “masked vigilante.” We just hope the show can get “take that, patriarchy” to catch on as a badass catchphrase.
