MTV renews Scream for a third season, with a third set of showrunners

Much like Sidney Prescott and Gale Weathers in the Scream movies, Scream the TV show cannot be killed. According to Variety, MTV has renewed the series for a six-episode third season, and in Scream the TV show tradition, it’s trudging along with new showrunners yet again. Michael Gans and Richard Register replaced Jill Blotevogel and Jaime Paglia as showrunners after the first season, and now they’re moving on, too. New showrunners have not been announced yet, and announcements about casting, location, and a production start date also have yet to been made. So all we know is that there will be a third season of Scream the TV show.

Also unknown: Will the third showrunning team in three seasons finally be able to make the show work? Scream the TV show will likely continue to borrow ideas from Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson’s slasher franchise, and will also likely continue to live in its shadow. It’s unclear if the Scream aftershow, Scream After Dark, will also continue to run in conjunction with the show’s third season.

The renewal comes ahead of the two-hour Scream Halloween special, which will air October 18 at 9 p.m. on MTV.
