MTV’s Fear Factor revival suggests today’s youth are afraid of some stupid stuff

Fear Factor is coming back, but this time it’s getting slightly more existential. According to The Hollywood Reporter, MTV is rebooting the reality series for a 12-episode run with Ludacris as host. However, this version of the property promises to be less about eating disgusting things and more about modern day psychological traumas like being without a mobile device. Because, you know, kids these days.

Per THR, “the newly designed stunts are geared at tapping into visceral fears of today’s anxious youth—such as couch surfing at 300 feet and waterlogging personal cellphones.” (It’s unclear if this will be a literal interpretation of the term “couch surfing.”) The publication also notes that the stunts will be “inspired by urban legends, scary movies and online videos from the zeitgeist.” So get ready for some truly frightening memes. The show will premiere May 30.
