My Little Pony’s Lauren Faust is making a movie about Medusa

If you strip away all of the stuff about sisterly love and wacky snowmen, Frozen is basically a superhero origin story about a girl who can turn things into ice. That seems to be Sony’s reading of it, at least, since it’s moving forward with Medusa, a story that is basically a superhero origin story about a girl who can turn things into stone.

This comes via Variety, which also reports that Lauren Faust, the creative director of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, will direct the animated comedy. The film will reportedly begin with Medusa as a human girl who gets transformed into a monster by an angry Goddess. She’ll then assemble “a goofy team of oddball and misfit mythological creatures” to try and get back to normal, but along the way she’ll learn a lesson about how what makes people different is actually what makes them special. We’d tag that with a spoiler warning, but come on, what other lesson would she learn?

If that plot synopsis doesn’t make it clear enough, putting Faust in charge is obviously an indication that this film will treat the snake-haired monster girl differently from most stories. Faust herself says that Medusa will be a “clever, heartfelt animated comedy about a girl who’s having the ultimate bad hair day.” Also, Faust’s involvement means the film will probably have a mildly weird but mostly harmless adult male following. They’ll call themselves Medu-bros or Man-dusas.
