NAACP Image Award nominations celebrate Beyoncé, Moonlight, Birth Of A Nation

The NAACP Image Awards released its nominations today. And while in the past the organization has celebrated media featuring people of color that hasn’t found the same success in broader award shows, this year there’s a lot of crossover. For instance, Moonlight, Fences, Loving, Black-ish, Atlanta, and The People V. O.J. Simpson were lauded by both the Image Awards and the Golden Globes, which released its nominations yesterday. Meanwhile, the biggest difference between the two award shows is probably that one-time Oscar frontrunner The Birth Of A Nation scored six nominations at the Image Awards after having failed to earn any Golden Globes nods following backlash against creator/star Nate Parker’s past.

In terms of TV, The Carmichael Show, Underground, Empire, Queen Sugar, and Survivor’s Remorse were a few of the shows uniquely singled out by the Image Awards. And This Is Us is proving to once again be an unexpected award show darling, earning a nod for Best Drama along with two acting nominations. The NAACP Image Awards also covers music and literature, with Beyoncé nabbing seven nominations in the first arena for Lemonade. That includes her nomination for “Entertainer Of The Year,” alongside Viola Davis, Regina King, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and Chance The Rapper, making it arguably one of the most competitive categories in any award show this year.

The 48th Annual Image Awards are set to air live on TV One on February 11. They will once again be hosted by Anthony Anderson, who is also nominated for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series for Black-ish and for co-hosting the 2016 BET Awards with Tracee Ellis Ross. A selection of major nominees is below, and the rest are available on Variety.
