Naomi Watts bored with movie stardom, gets her own Netflix series instead

You know what’s exhausting? Making a highly successful career toggling back and forth between artistically fulfilling and critically acclaimed independent cinema and wildly lucrative four-quadrant Hollywood blockbusters. God, even just typing it is such a drag. Perhaps that’s why Naomi Watts has chosen to pull back the reins on that job description: It’s just been announced the actor is starring in her very own Netflix series, following in the footsteps of Kevin Spacey, though hopefully with fewer E*trade commercials.

Watts is set to headline Gypsy, a new psychological thriller series from the streaming service. She’ll be playing Jean Holloway, described in the press release as “a therapist who begins to develop dangerous and intimate relationships with the people in her patients’ lives.” Details are scarce, but it seems safe to assume this means she’ll be confronting the parents of psychologically damaged preadolescents about their foolish helicopter behavior. Executive produced by Liza Chasin and Lisa Rubin (the latter of whom is also writing the project), the first two episodes are set to be directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson (50 Shades Of Grey). Watts can currently be seen in Demolition, a career choice that reaffirms how inevitably boring it must be toplining dramas opposite Jake Gyllenhaal.
