Natalie Dormer to play a demonic shapeshifter in Penny Dreadful follow-up

New details have emerged on Showtime’s follow-up to Penny Dreadful. According to Deadline, Natalie Dormer, whom we once hoped to see win the Game Of Thrones as Margaery Tyrell, will lead Penny Dreadful: City Of Angels along with Here And Now alum Daniel Zovatto.

John Logan is once again at the helm, writing and producing City Of Angels, which will be set in 1930s Los Angeles. Envisioned as a “spiritual descendant” to the Victorian London-set original—which we must remind you was canceled after its third season despite starring Eva Green and Billie Piper, for crying out loud (and, okay, Timothy Dalton and Josh Hartnett)—City Of Angels will be “deeply infused with social and political tension.” As Detective Tiago Vega, Zovatto will try to solve the grisly murder case of a lifetime while also “embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles: from the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore, to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism.”

Dormer has just been cast as Magda, a shapeshifting demon who, fittingly enough, is “charismatic, clever, and chameleonic.” She can assume the appearance of anyone, which, in addition to be played by Dormer, makes her a “dangerous enemy and an invaluable ally.” There’s no word yet on when we can expect the series to premiere, but Logan will executive produce alongside Michael Aguilar and returning Penny Dreadful EPs Sam Mendes and Pippa Harris. Paco Cabezas, who directed several episodes of the original series, will helm a few episodes of City Of Angels.
