NBC announces midseason premiere dates for Powerless, new Tina Fey show, more
NBC has laid out its 2017 midseason schedule, adding a couple of much-anticipated new shows to its regular roster. First up: the DC Comics-based Powerless, which will see stars Vanessa Hudgens, Alan Tudyk, Dani Pudi, and Ron Funches all making comedic hay out of life in a superhero universe. Between the talent on display, and the basic premise—Hudgens is an idealist Wayne Industries employer, attempting to convince her boss, Tudyk, that regular folks need Batman-esque gadgets in their lives, too—it’s one of the more ambitious and interesting projects on NBC’s current docket. Powerless will run on Thursday nights at 8:30, the better to get a Superstore boost, and premieres on February 2.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday nights, NBC will use its smash-hit singing series The Voice to launch two new sitcoms. First up is John Lithgow’s Trial & Error, which sees the Third Rock From The Sun star spoof the current true-crime TV obsession by playing a genial accused murderer who can’t stop making himself look guilty. (Think The Night Of, but funny, and without all the eczema talk.) The series will debut on March 7 at 9:30 p.m., and each Tuesday after in hour-long, back-to-back blocks.
Once Trial finishes up its run, it’ll hand the coveted post-Voice spot off to Great News, the latest offering from Tina Fey and her 30 Rock and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt collaborator Robert Carlock. Starring Briga Heelan and Andrea Martin as a daughter-mother news team, and Pitch Perfect and Arrested Development favorite John Michael Higgins as their blowhard boss, the Tracey Wigfield-created show will debut on April 25th.
NBC also announced schedules for its midseason dramas—including Blacklist: Redemption (Thursday, Feb. 23), Chicago Justice (Sunday, March 5), and the returning Shades Of Blue (also Sunday, March 5)—as well as its new Steve Harvey-hosted kids show, Little Big Shots.
