NBC cancels Megyn Kelly Today, is still kind of pretending she might have a job with them next week

It’s turning out to be a pretty good weekend for connoisseurs of Megyn Kelly-related schadenfreude. Less than a day after her old pals at Fox News made it clear, in no uncertain terms, that she’s not going to be couch-surfing with them once NBC inevitably kicks her out of the house, the first big step of that long-anticipated process commenced: The news, reported in The New York Times, that her morning chat show Megyn Kelly Today has officially been canceled.

Kelly hasn’t been on the air with a new episode of Today since Wednesday, when she issued a public apology for the show she broadcast on Tuesday, when she asked what the big, racist deal about blackface was. Now, NBC has confirmed that Megyn Kelly Today—for which the blackface comments were just a high-profile cherry on top of the “bad ratings” sundae it’s been force-feeding the network for months—is no more, and that “Next week, the 9 a.m. hour will be hosted by other Today co-anchors.”

Still, Kelly’s camp is being careful to make it clear that the former Fox host, who’s right in the middle of a $69 million three-year contract with NBC, still totally works for the network. “Megyn remains an employee of NBC News and discussions about next steps are continuing,” her lawyer told press today, even though we’re pretty sure that any steps that aren’t “out the front door, and possibly into traffic” are going to be met with pushback from on-air and off-air talent at NBC News, many of whom (including Al Roker and chairman Andy Lack) have made it clear that they cordially loathe her guts. We can expect the final shoe to drop on Monday, probably, with all that really remains to be seen being how much cash Kelly will get for her dedicated service of fucking up two different NBC news programs in the span of a couple of months.
