NBC clicks its heels, sends Emerald City home
In with the new, out with the old: Just as NBC announced its first full-series orders of 2017, it also stopped to clear up a little extra room on its schedule by formally canceling Emerald City, its gritty Wizard Of Oz show. Despite typically gorgeous direction from its creator, visual visionary Tarsem Singh, neither critics nor audiences ever really responded to the show’s attempts to merge L. Frank Baum’s classic novel with the violence and politics of Game Of Thrones.
The series wrapped up its first season back in March, with classic characters like The Wicked Witch Of The West, Ozma, and the Wizard himself (Ana Ularu, Jordan Loughran, and Vincent D’Onofrio, respectively) all navigating shifting loyalties, military struggles, and an Oz-like veneer of twisted magical whimsy, only to have it all blown away in an inescapable tornado of audience indifference.
