NBC picks up Kenan Thompson's new show, but he still won't leave SNL just yet
Just over a week ago, we reported that Kenan Thompson had confirmed that he’s staying on Saturday Night Live for at least another year, solidifying his status as the show’s longest-tenured cast member. Now, though, keeping him on SNL just got a bit more complicated, as NBC has given a series order to his comedy pilot The Kenan Show—which is about a newly widowed dad struggling to raise his wacky two kids and begrudgingly accepting help from his wacky father-in-law (Andy Garcia!). This comes from The Hollywood Reporter, which says Thompson is still expected to stay on SNL for another year, but “it remains unclear in what capacity,” meaning he might not be appearing as regularly as he does now (but that’s just a guess from THR, not a confirmation).
Thompson is also set to be a judge for NBC’s comedy competition show Bring The Funny, with THR saying he’ll do that, then film the next season of SNL, and then eventually move on to The Kenan Show next summer (at which point he would apparently be done with SNL). Basically, Thompson has a very busy year ahead of him.
