NBC renews Superstore for a super-sized third season

NBC has granted a super-sized order to its next season of Superstore. Variety reports that the network’s not only renewing the America Ferrera-starring sitcom for a third year, but granting it an extended order of 22 episodes—as opposed to waiting until ratings are in before expanding the season order, as it has for the last two years.

Two seasons in, Superstore has become a solid anchor for NBC’s Thursday night line-up, to the point that it’s currently being used as a lead-in launching pad for new mid-season comedies like the DC Comics-set Powerless. Starring Ferrera, Ben Feldman, and Mark McKinney as the hapless employees of a fictional big-box retailer, the series has pulled in consistently strong ratings in its second season, both for regular viewing and via digital, and is reportedly a favorite of NBC executives.
