Netflix boldly goes where no broadcast network has gone before, gives Judd Apatow show a second season
Netflix—the streaming service that got you hooked on Freaks And Geeks and Undeclared, only to let you down when both shows ran out of episodes after one season—has picked up two rounds of Love, a new comedy series from Judd Apatow, Paul Rust, and Leslie Arfin. That’s big news for fans of Rust, Love co-star Gillian Jacobs, and/or chronicles of comedically dysfunctional couples, but it’s even bigger news for Apatow, who for once in his professional life doesn’t have to worry if a show he developed will make it to a second season.
“But didn’t Girls, which Apatow executive produces, receive a second season after its third episode, thus negating the thrust of this Newswire?” you might ask. And you’d be right to ask that, though it does nothing to diminish the fact that, in 2016, Netflix subscribers will get to know and love Love’s Gus (Rust) and Mickey (Jacobs) without fear that the characters will disappear forever after 10 episodes. Instead, the characters and the “exhilarations and humiliations of intimacy, commitment, and other things they were hoping to avoid” (or so says the press release) will go away for a slightly shorter period, after which Love will return for a 12-episode second season in 2017.
Elsewhere in the uncanceled, imagined Apatowverse, the former undergrads of Undeclared would be celebrating their ninth year in the workforce this fall (though who are we kidding—aspiring actor Lloyd and wannabe musician Marshall would never find steady work), while a 15-year-old Freaks And Geeks would find Bill trying to fashion his own Captain Janeway costume for Halloween 1995.
