Netflix buys a war drama starring Fifty Shades Of Grey’s Jamie Dornan
Now that Fifty Shades Of Grey has satisfied America’s long-dormant desire to take its money in an erotic display of box-office dominance, star Jamie Dornan is suddenly a hot property. The actor is already lined up to return as BDSM enthusiast/billionaire Christian Grey in at least two more movies, and will star in the war drama Jadotville in the meantime. Netflix has snapped up the rights to the movie and plans to debut it sometime in 2016.
Jadotville tells the true story of a 1961 battle between a group of about 150 Irish U.N. peacekeepers and 3,000 troops cobbled together by the breakaway state of Katanga, which had split from the Congo the previous year with the support of powerful Belgian mining interests. Dornan will be playing Patrick Quinlan, the Irish commander who held the battalion’s position for five days despite being vastly outgunned and outnumbered. He did eventually surrender to the separatists, but that didn’t stop Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos from being impressed by his tenacity:
“The story of how Pat Quinlan led his troops against an overwhelming force without losing a single man is one of the great stories of the 20th century, and we are proud to be working with such a talented and committed team to bring it to life,” Sarandos said. “This film will be an amazing addition to our global original films initiative.”
Netflix will premiere Jadotville online, but is also considering a theatrical run that may or may not piss off theater chains big time. Production is scheduled to begin in April.
