Netflix buys Mark Millar’s comics line, gets ready to adapt all of it
Rather than let the titles turn into films in the piecemeal fashion we’ve seen to date, Netflix has just bought up Mark Millar’s—the creator of Kick-Ass, Wanted, and Kingsman—entire line of comics. The streaming platform put out the word via press release earlier today, though the price tag for Millarworld, as the comics are collectively known, remains unknown. Netflix did tout some numbers in the announcement—namely, the box-office takes for film adaptations of the three aforementioned Millar titles, as well as the worldwide revenues for Logan, Captain America: Civil War, and the first Avengers movie, which were all developed from Millar’s ideas/arcs. You can see where this is going. If not, Netflix is happy to connect the dots for you, announcing plans to develop “films, series, and kids’ shows” based on Millar’s comics. Which means that, in addition to the forthcoming Superior, we could see adaptations of American Jesus, Empress, and Huck. Yep, that can definitely happen now.
Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos effused over the deal in a statement, saying “We look forward to creating new Netflix Originals from several existing franchises as well as new super-hero, anti-hero, fantasy, sci-fi and horror stories Mark and his team will continue to create and publish.” Meanwhile, over at Millarworld—which again, is apparently the name of Millar’s ersatz publishing house—the “Old Man Logan” writer was pinching himself about his boon, which he noted is “only the third time in history a comic-book company purchase on this scale has ever happened.” Back over to Netflix, which shared this look at all the titles it just snapped up, and can’t wait to bring to your screens, for as much enjoyment as you got out of Logan or, um, Kick-Ass 2.
