Netflix is blessing us with a Selena scripted series

23 years after her untimely death, Selena Quintanilla remains one of the most beloved and influential musicians in history. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix is developing a new scripted series about the life of the late Tejano sensation who went on to achieve massive crossover success on the U.S. pop charts.

Titled Selena: The Series, the show is described as more of a coming-of-age story than a typical biopic. Moisés Zamora, whose credits include American Crime and Star, will script the series, which will be co-produced by Selena’s family members. Having the cooperation and blessing of the late singer’s family is crucial; the surviving Quintanillas (and her father Abraham in particular) have an iron grip on Selena’s estate–and for good reason, considering the circumstances surrounding her death at the hands of an obsessive fan.

In an official statement on the series, Suzette Quintanilla (Selena’s sister) said, “Selena will always have a lasting place in music history and we feel great responsibility to do justice to her memory. With this series, viewers will finally get the full history of Selena, our family, and the impact she has had on all of our lives.” Just two years after her passing, Jennifer Lopez portrayed the singer in the acclaimed biopic Selena, which was also made with the cooperation of the Quintanilla family. No word yet on who will follow J.Lo’s iconic portrayal of the Latin Madonna.

Netflix has yet to reveal any further details beyond a short teaser touting the series title and Selena’s signature logo. As of now, it’s unclear when the series will premiere, how many episodes it will contain, how long those episodes will be, or if fans can expect more than a single season. But none of that really matters, because we’re getting a TV show about Selena. Can I get an amen?!
