Netflix is releasing a one-hour special of Ricky Gervais’ Derek
Probably as a result of all that deafening critical acclaim, Netflix will be airing a one-hour special of Ricky Gervais’ sitcom Derek. The comedian tweeted the news that his show, whose second season aired last summer, would be returning to the streaming service on April 3:
The special already aired last month in the UK, and no doubt the reviews over there made Gervais excited to share it on this side of the Atlantic—maybe it was The Telegraph’s calling it “glib and manipulative” that really got him pumped. Still, Gervais was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance as the titular simpleton (even if he deservedly lost to Jeffrey Tambor), so it seems the Hollywood Foreign Press sees something in the actor that his homeland doesn’t—potential ratings-boosting controversy, perhaps.
