Netflix is reviving The Dark Crystal as a prequel series
What’s perhaps the most terrifying entry in the Jim Henson canon is getting a revival at Netflix, now the official home of reboots and ’80s nostalgia. The streaming service has announced a prequel to 1982’s The Dark Crystal, and has already ordered 10 episodes. Titled The Dark Crystal: The Age Of Resistance, the plot concerns three Gelfling who “discover the horrifying secret behind the Skeksis’ power” and “set out on an epic journey to ignite the fires of rebellion and save their world.”
Though the fact that Now You See Me’s Louis Leterrier is directing and executive producing doesn’t inspire a ton of confidence, the Jim Henson Company appears to be heavily involved. In its release, Netflix promises that the puppets will be made by the Jim Henson’s Creature Shop and conceptual designer Brian Froud, who worked on the original. There is no planned release date, but Netflix noted it will start shooting this fall. Watch a brief teaser below.
