Netflix orders comedy series based on the Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling

For those of you who managed to go outside at some point during the ’80s—or are simply too young to remember them—Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling, or G.L.O.W., was a syndicated TV show launched in 1986 that was based out of Las Vegas and featured an assortment of big-haired aerobic instructor types putting on Halloween-outlet costumes and wrestling each other in hopes of breaking into show business. Wrestlers rapped their intros. Sylvester Stallone’s mom was one of the team managers. It’s among the top 10 most ’80s things of all time:

Well, now those neon-and-shoulder-pad-filled glory days are set to return as Deadline reports that Netflix has ordered 10 episodes of a comedy series called G.L.O.W. inspired by the real-life league. Executive produced by Orange Is The New Black’s Jenji Kohan and co-created by Homeland producer Liz Flahive and Weeds and Nurse Jackie producer Carly Mensch, the story will follow the fictional adventures of an aspiring actress who joins up with an all-female wrestling league in an attempt to jumpstart her career.

No date for the show has been announced as of yet, and the lucky actress who gets to play astrologer/wrestling promoter/matriarch Jackie Stallone has yet to be named. In the meantime, the 2011 documentary on the league, GLOW: The Story Of The Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling, is out now and is quite fascinating.
