Netflix orders new fantasy series from Bird Box writer

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has announced an adaptation of author Leigh Bardugo’s “Grishaverse” books, specifically Shadow And Bone and Six Of Crows, with Bird Box and Arrival writer Eric Heisserer writing the eight-episode series. This seems like a nice performance bonus for Heisserer, who helped deliver a surprise viral hit with Bird Box even though the movie seemed pretty similar to another horror hit and also the ending felt a little cheap, but this new project—Shadow And Bone—at least seems to be a bit more fresh.

The Hollywood Reporter says the story takes place in a world that is “divided in two by a massive barrier of perpetual darkness that hides monsters who feast on human flesh,” with the divided world being inhabited by people called “Grisha” who have magic powers. The main character is a young soldier who finds out that she “has a power that could unite her country,” but she has to deal with “dangerous forces” that want to stop her.

In other words (and we say this without even a hint of judgement), it sounds like a story adapted from a series of fantasy novels.
