Sylvester Stallone’s upcoming series Ultimate Beastmaster—which he’s executive producing alongside Dave Broome (The Biggest Loser) for Netflix—is unfortunately neither a reboot or continuation of the 1982 sword and sorcery film starring Marc Singer. It is, however, an international competition series featuring athletes from six different countries struggling to complete in what producers are calling “one of the most physically demanding obstacle courses ever devised.”
In each of the first nine episodes, competitors from the United States, Brazil, South Korea, Mexico, Germany, and Japan test their endurance and physical prowess against one another as they race through “The Beast,” with the winner being crowned “Beastmaster.” For the final episode, the nine Beastmasters will battle for the title of “Ultimate Beastmaster.” The series will be streamed in six localized versions, with different languages and hosts, to correspond with competitors varying countries. Terry Crews (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and Charissa Thompson (Fox Sports) have been tapped to serve as hosts for the English-language version.
“The invitation to partner with Netflix and mega-producer Dave Broome on this revolutionary concept was an opportunity I couldn’t resist,” Stallone says in a statement. “The world will watch in awe as amazing competitors from around the globe overcome grueling physical challenges, and in the process become champions and heroes. The course is unequaled in its daring creation and I am excited to be a part of it.” This is the second big step that Stallone has made into the television world in the past few weeks. At the end of last month, it was announced that the 69-year-old actor and filmmaker would star in a planned TV adaptation of the 2000 novel Omertà, the third part in Mario Puzo’s Mafia trilogy.
