Netflix picks up 4 new shows, including drama from Octavia Spencer and LeBron James
Netflix has shared some new premiere dates and new trailers today, and now it has also announced four new original shows. The first is Madam C.J. Walker, which counts LeBron James and Octavia Spencer among its executive producers and will star Spencer as the eponymous C.J. Walker. Based on A’Lelia Bundles’ book On Her Own Ground, the show will tell the “highly irreverent” story of hair-care mogul C.J. Walker and how she became the first black woman in America to be a self-made millionaire.
The streaming service has also announced White Lines, a collaboration from the producers behind The Crown and Spanish-language drama La Casa De Papel. White Lines is a mystery series about a woman investigating the mysterious death of her brother, a famous DJ who disappeared twenty years ago, and it will involve the “thrilling world of dance music, super yachts, lies, and cover-ups.” No casting details have been announced, but La Casa De Papel writer Alex Pina will be writing it.
Netflix is also getting The Curious Creations Of Christine McConnell, a baking show in which McConnell (an Instagram star) brings viewers into her “terrifyingly delicious home” to bake and make wacky stuff with her “colorful collection of creatures.” That comes from a press release, so we don’t have more information, but the show will be produced by The Jim Henson Company. Lastly, Netflix has ordered Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat, a more straightforward cooking show that is also a four-part culinary travel series. It centers on chef Samin Nosrat as she travels around the world and is based on her book of the same name. It’ll premiere on October 19.
