Netflix to pit nerd against nerd in ’90s-set teen drama Everything Sucks!

A new Netflix series plans to chart what is essentially a conflict between the type of people we write about on this website (movie and TV stars) and the type of people who write for this website (nerds with very strong opinions). The streaming service announced today that it’s ordering Everything Sucks!unrelated to the Descendents album—a teen-centered show about an AV club (hey, that’s our name!) and a drama club that “collide in 1996 Oregon.”

“Some of our favorite shows of all time—The Wonder Years, Happy Days, That ’70s Show, Freaks and Geeks—looked back at bygone eras with 20 years of hindsight,” creators Ben York Jones and Michael Mohan said in a statement. “We think this is a great time to take a look back at high school and relive the fashion, music, and attitudes of the mid-’90s the way we remember it. Not sensationalized, not watered down; but desperate, heartfelt, awkward, and exciting.” The endless march of time keeps drawing nostalgia nearer and nearer—all that talk of “20 years of hindsight” makes the ’80s-set Stranger Things look like ancient history.

Everything Sucks! is described as a half-hour dramedy, which will follow teens played by Peyton Kennedy and Jahi Winston. The first 10 episodes will drop sometime next year.
