Although Netflix has made a few recent inroads toward shoring up its streaming content, HBO has yet to get on board, and now HBO’s co-president Eric Kessler has told The Hollywood Reporter that it’s unlikely that the two will ever reach any agreements at all. Instead, the network is focusing on its own competing HBO Go service, which means that all of its content—including its original shows and movies from Warner Bros., 20th Century Fox, and Universal—will still only be available to HBO subscribers, just as it’s always been. Kessler says that his reasoning is that “there is value in exclusivity” since consumers are more likely to “pay a premium for high quality, exclusive content,” as though HBO were some sort of country club that conferred privileged status upon its viewers merely by separating them from the Netflix riffraff. But whatever, it’s his company.
