New CBS comedy to explore New York City’s competitive housing market
It feels like real estate in New York City has always been at a premium—long before tiny houses became a thing, New Yorkers were finding creative ways to live in 300 sf studios. And art has mostly imitated life, which is why Rachel tolerated living with Monica on Friends, and why Tom Hanks disguised himself as a woman on Bosom Buddies (presumably). These tales of relatively cramped quarters, which were recently covered in The New York Times, are the inspiration for a new show from Cougar Town executive producers Mike Lisbe and Nate Reger.
According to Deadline, Lisbe and Reger are developing the multi-camera comedy—titled Married With Roommates, because apparently there isn’t even room in these apartments for a comma or ellipsis—for CBS. The series will follow a pair of newlyweds who can’t afford to rent an apartment on their own, so they bring in three roommates. There’s no word on which neighborhood or borough they’ll be apartment-hunting in, so it remains to be see just how authentic the show’s representation of New York City will be, and just how large of an apartment the five people will inexplicably be able to afford.
