New Godzilla: King Of The Monsters trailer is just the tip of the iceberg
What if Godzilla was one of us? Just a slob like one of us? Just a giant lizard king who wants to adopt humans as pets? That human domestication thing is an interesting idea posited by Ken Watanabe in the new trailer for Godzilla: King Of The Monsters, in which humans like Millie Bobby Brown and Vera Farmiga are caught in the crossfire between Godzilla and other “titans.” (Also, why is the theme song for this movie not the jingle from that ’90s “Crossfire” board game?)
The latest addition to Warner Bros. and Legendary’s “MonsterVerse” (their phrasing, not ours) sees Godzilla fighting some of his (or her) most iconic monster enemies, like Mothra, Rodan, and “his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah.” As all of these titans duke it out for supremacy, the future of humanity becomes a giant question mark—unless we’re cool with becoming Godzilla’s lap dogs. The sequel to Godzilla comes from director Mike Dougherty (Krampus) and also stars Thomas Middleditch (who may or may not still be in character as that guy from the cell phone commercials), Coach Taylor (or Kyle Chandler, whatever), Zhang Ziyi, and Sally Hawkins, who was clearly typecast as “woman who makes emoji heart eyes at weird scaly creatures.”
We’ll have to wait until May 31, 2019 to see if Sally Hawkins gets down with any of those lizard beasts in Godzilla: King Of The Monsters.
