New live-action comedy Star Trek series in the works from Tawny Newsome and Dear White People's Justin Simien

Some fresh genuine news out of Comic-Con today, as Star Trek honcho Alex Kurtzman revealed at the franchise’s panel this afternoon that a new live-action series set in the sci-fi universe is in the works. Still untitled, the comedy series is in the works from Star Trek: Lower Decks star Tawny Newsome and Dear White People creator Justin Simien, who was on hand to moderate the series’ panel.

Details about the series are scant and deliberately vague, although Newsome (who’s also a writer on the upcoming Starfleet Academy) did note that the show would feature “A clash of leadership, outsiders and odd couples. 25th century appointment viewing.” Simien added that it would focus on “People on a thing. Shenanigans.” He then added an “Uh-oh” when Kurtzman suggested they’d given too much away, before concluding, “Vibes.”

So, yeah, we don’t know a damn thing about this one, except that Newsome has been one of the most invigorating thing about modern Trek over the last few years, with a winning mixture of comedic chops and love for the franchise, so we’re excited to see what she’ll do with her own show. (Also, we might have been skeptical of Lower Decks when it was first in development, but the show has proven that comedy and Star Trek can work together in a way that doesn’t involve tossing just Tribbles at William Shatner, or putting all your Ferengi actors in drag, so we’re excited to see what this new series can do.)
