New The Purge: Election Year trailer is filled with candidates for the worst person ever

The third installment of what’s become The Purge franchise centers the pillaging action in our nation’s capital, where presidential hopeful Senator Charlene Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell) wants to do away with The Purge entirely, because it disproportionately affects the poor. But, as we learned in the previous trailer, there are some people—mostly old white guys in shadowy boardrooms—who don’t think that’s any reason to ban the Purge, which has been “keeping America great.” (The use of the modified phrase is probably just a coincidence.)

This new trailer for Election Year opens with political ads in support of the Purge, featuring everyday people who believe it would be “un-American” to abstain from purging, i.e., committing every foul act you can conceive of in the designated 12-hour timeframe. Roan and her head of security, Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo), have both survived a Purge night, but they still need some help on the streets of D.C. from the freedom fighter-type played by Mykelti Williamson. The guillotine makes another appearance as the violence makes its way to the National Mall, where the Lincoln Memorial is defaced. Look, we said there’s nothing to read into here, all right? Move along now.

The Purge: Election Year hits theaters July 1.
