New xXx trailer proves Vin Diesel can be fun without getting fast or furious

Sometimes, a movie trailer can sum up the appeal of a film so succinctly that just a few seconds of footage can tell you whether or not that particular movie is for you. This trailer for xXx: Return Of Xander Cage happens to be one such trailer, and its big moment comes about 40 seconds in. While being briefed about a team of karate villains who are threatening the world, Vin Diesel’s Xander Cage is told that the world needs “a patriot” who can be as awesome as these awesome karate villains. “There are no more patriots,” Cage says, “Just rebels and tyrants.” Then we get a few quick cuts of him skateboarding down a steep mountain road, riding the side of a bus and giving a high-five to a dude in a passing car. That bit alone makes it clear that this xXx sequel is going to be like a more hard-edged Fast And Furious movie, with the same level of absurd stunts and action but without all of that bullshit about cars or family. If that sounds good, you’re probably already on board.

Director D.J. Caruso’s xXx: Return Of Xander Cage will be in theaters on January 20, 2017.
