New York crix give top prize to United 93

An inside source tells us it took five ballots (that's a lot, apparently) to sort out a winner, but the New York Film Critics Circle has awarded Best Picture to United 93, which has had a strong showing so far among critics group across the country. (Whether Oscar will pay attention or not is another matter, but at least the film has more momentum than its goopy counterpart, World Trade Center.) Actor and actress prizes went to Forest Whitaker (The Last King Of Scotland) and Helen Mirren (The Queen), respectively, who have been dominating the other critics groups as well. Other significant awards went to Peter Morgan's screenplay for The Queen, Little Children's Jackie Earle Haley for Best Supporting Actor, Dreamgirls' Jennifer Hudson for Best Supporting Actress, and 1969's Army Of Shadows for Best Foreign Film. In the last vote of the day, New York's own Martin Scorsese took the Best Director prize.
