Newcomer Denzel Washington to direct an episode of Grey’s Anatomy

In what is an unbelievably lucky big break, The Wrap is reporting that relatively inexperienced director Denzel Washington has been tapped to helm an upcoming episode of Grey’s Anatomy, one of TV’s biggest dramas. Until now, Washington has exactly two directing credits to his name, both of them movies: 2002’s Antwone Fisher and 2007’s The Great Debaters. He has built a respectable career as an actor, though, having appeared in a number of classic films like Training Day and Man On Fire. He has even won a pair of Academy Awards, so he definitely knows what he’s doing in front of a camera.

Hopefully for him he’s just as capable behind a camera, though, because he’s graduating into the proverbial big leagues by getting on a show like Grey’s Anatomy. Other directors who have also only ever made two movies would kill for a chance like this, so he’s probably feeling a lot of pressure to not screw it up. Of course, he could always go back to acting if he does, but acting can only get you so far. The real celebrities are the ones successfully directing episodes of long-running drama shows on ABC.
