Nicolas Cage to play a not-so-friendly neighborhood Spider-Man in Into The Spider-Verse
He’s been Ghost Rider. He’s been Big Daddy. He’s been Superman (after a failed earlier attempt). And now, purchaser of castles and fine portrayer of going bananas Nicolas Cage can add another superhero to his roster of costumed vigilantes: Spider-Man. Or, rather, a somewhat unusual version of the web-crawler.
Collider reports Cage is set to voice the character of Spider-Man Noir in the upcoming animated film Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. If you’re not a reader of the comics (or a viewer of the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon series, where Noir Spidey has also appeared), it’s probably worth some explanation of what the hell that means. As we previously reported, the film—much like the comics that precede it—features various dimensions, most of which have their own version of Spider-Man. In the “noir” dimension, Peter Parker is the apprentice of a reporter (Ben Urich, whom you may remember from season one of Daredevil in our own MCU dimension) when he gets bitten by a rare imported spider and develops the same powers we know about in our own Spidey. But this is a darker take on the character, one who dresses in a costume best explained as “retro gumshoe meets the Rocketeer meets Spawn,” and who isn’t afraid to use guns to take out the criminal underworld.
The most recent trailer already revealed we’d be meeting more than one Spider-Man, and this confirms that we’ll be getting some of the more intriguing iterations of the character—plus, with Cage voicing Spider-Man Noir, the assumption is this will be a semi-substantial part, rather than a brief cameo in the upcoming movie.
