Nicolas Winding Refn thinks he could make a pretty good Batgirl movie

We’ve already established that Gotham City is a super dark and angsty place. But perhaps it could use a little more synthesizers and neon-drenched ambience? That’s The Neon Demon director Nicolas Winding Refn’s thought, as he says in a recent interview with Business Insider. “God, I would love to make [a superhero movie], it would probably be great fun,” Refn says. “I just don’t know when it’s going to happen. I very much enjoy my freedom creatively, but I also would love to make one of those big Hollywood films that costs a lot of money and has a lot of people running around with cell phones and all that insanity.” (Wonder if he’d still be able to yell “let’s fuck” or “violence, motherfuckers” at the beginning of every take on the set of a $200 million blockbuster?)

As far as what hero he’d like to bring to life, Batgirl seems like a default choice. “What ones are left?,” Refn says, taking a moment to think. “You know the one I want to do? I want to make Batgirl.” That’s not the most passionate argument as to why he’s the right director for the job, but, if you think about it, a Refn Batgirl movie could work. There are certainly plenty of Batgirls/Batwomen who have appeared on screen and in the pages of DC comics to choose from: For starters, there’s the 1967 TV version of Barbara Gordon, who rides a sweet motorcycle, and Refn could make that look cool. Or maybe the post-Killing Joke, Oracle version, where she’s a paraplegic computer genius—actually, maybe not. Stick with one of the assassins, or maybe Alicia Silverstone’s infamous Barbara Wilson. Now, a Nicolas Winding Refn remake of Batman & Robinthat we’d pay to see.
