Nicole Kidman joins Top Of The Lake season 2

Back in 2014, it was announced that Jane Campion’s dark, brilliant serialized crime thriller Top Of The Lake would be getting a second season, and today, Deadline reports that Nicole Kidman has joined the cast of season two. Kidman’s involvement in the project has been rumored for a while now, but now it’s official: Kidman has arrived in Sydney to start rehearsals with series regular Elisabeth Moss. Under the title Top Of The Lake: Season Two, the second season picks up four years after season one’s finale, with Moss’s Detective Robin Griffin working on a new case after a woman’s body washes up on a Sydney beach. Kidman is reuniting with Campion, who previously directed her in The Portrait Of A Lady.

Brian Walsh, the chief of Australian television company Foxtel, told the Daily Telegraph that it took a full year to lock Kidman into the project, but she signed on for good last week. (Kidman’s no easy catch.) “I am very excited to be coming home to work with darling friend Jane Campion, whose work I respect and admire,” she told the Daily Telegraph. “I’m also so happy to be joining the incredible Elisabeth Moss.” Moss indeed is incredible: She won a Golden Globe for her performance in Top Of The Lake, and is owed many more awards she never received for her work on Mad Men.

Season two, which will be co-written by series creators Campion and Gerald Lee, will also feature Game Of Thrones star, rising Star Wars villain, and renowned Madonna fan Gwendoline Christie in an unspecified “major role.” Liv Hewson, David Dencik, Alice Englert, and Ewen Leslie also star. The second season of Top Of The Lake will air on SundanceTV and next-day on Hulu. Meanwhile, other Kidman-based rumors, like her involvement in the upcoming Wonder Woman movie, do not seem to be valid.
