Believe it or not, you can still play video games without going outside and risking getting mugged or finding a corpse. Even though it helped usher in our new, terrifying age of active gaming, Nintendo’s next big nostalgia play is bringing games back to their roots: something you do while staring at a TV and pressing actual buttons on a horribly uncomfortable hunk of plastic. Today, the company announced it’s finally catching up with Intellivision, Sega, and all those shady companies who’ve been putting out bootleg plug-and-play systems for years with the release of the NES Classic Edition, a replica of its debut console that’s small enough to fit in the palm of your hand and comes pre-loaded with 30 built-in games.
Scheduled to launch on Nov. 11 and selling for $60, the NES Classic is equipped with an HDMI port so you can actually hook the thing up to your newfangled TV and two controller ports that use the connector found on the bottom of a Wii remote. It comes packaged with one NES-style controller, and Nintendo will be selling extras at $10 a pop for those of you who want to relive forcing your younger sibling to play as stupid old Luigi. If you’d rather use a less painfully rectangular controller, your only options will be the Wii’s Classic Controller and Classic Controller Pro, both of which Nintendo stopped making years ago but can be nabbed for a song on eBay.
As for the list of games, it’s got all of your Nintendo-developed heavy hitters—the three Marios, both Zeldas, Metroid, the lame version of Punch-Out!! that doesn’t include Mike Tyson—plus plenty of the company’s less iconic games and those it brought over to the NES from arcades. More surprising is the list of non-Nintendo games, which include the likes of Castlevania, Mega Man 2, and Final Fantasy. The system will also include the ability to save your game at any time, which is a welcome bit of modern convenience and pretty much the only way you’re going to beat Ghosts ’N Goblins.
