No man is a Lonely Island in the Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping trailer
The first trailer for The Lonely Island’s feature-length film, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, has arrived just a week after the title became known. The Behind The Music-style video features swooning testimonials from such popular performers as Usher, DJ Khaled, and Carrie Underwood; and the notoriously-critical Simon Cowell declares that Conner4Real (Andy Samberg) “saved” music, presumably with his debut solo album. We watch Conner preen, pose, and perhaps take a metaphor about loving his fans a little too far before he admits that it takes a village—comprising 30 people, according to Tim Meadows—to make him “look dope.”
This fawning look just details the pride that cometh before Conner’s fall following the fiasco that is his sophomore album. He’ll reunite with the members of his former boy band, though it’s hard to pick out precisely who they are in the trailer—maybe Adam Levine’s hologram is one of them? There will probably be another trailer or teaser to enlighten us soon enough, but in the meantime, take another look at Bill Hader’s roadie character, who likes to flatline in his spare time.
The Lonely Island triumvirate split up the writing and directing duties for its debut feature: Samberg wrote the script with Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, who also directed. Oh, and Judd Apatow helped produce. Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping hits theaters June 3.
