Now you can have a virtual Facebook chat with Back To The Future’s Doc Brown

There are dozens of ways a Back To The Future fan could choose to spend October 21, 2015, the date when Doc Brown and Marty McFly supposedly arrive in what is, for them, the distant future. You could actually watch the original film trilogy. That’s not a terribly creative way to mark this historic occasion, sure, but it’s at least appropriate to the topic and easily available to just about everyone. For those who don’t want to spend six hours watching movies they’ve already memorized, the internet has many, many, many other alternate suggestions for what has been deemed Back To The Future day. Perhaps fans might choose to while away a few minutes or even hours at the Facebook page for Doctor Emmett Brown, where they will be able to engage in a virtual chat with the famed mad scientist. The premise of the page is that lovable Doc Brown has succeeded in traveling from 1985 to 2015 and has immediately gotten the knack of social media. For the last few days, Doc has been keeping an online record of his activities in the strange future year of 2015.

Fans who take Doc Brown up on his offer will find themselves having a simulated conversation with the beloved fictional character. In the following exchange, the flux capacitor’s inventor is largely flummoxed by modern coffee marketing.

So how did this all come about? According to Richard Heby, Head of Content at a New York film called Hokku PR, “this virtual character came to fruition because of a collaborative effort between software AI company Imperson and Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.” A previous collaboration along these lines created a virtual simulacrum of the Laura Barns character from Unfriended. Such times to be alive, eh?
