Now you can own Kurt Cobain’s ratty MTV Unplugged sweater
Nirvana’s performance on MTV Unplugged is not only one of the most acclaimed installments of the popular acoustic performance series (Sorry, LL Cool J), but a classic Nirvana album in its own right. Spare and elegiac, the whole thing was a rather transcendent affair. Beautifully subdued versions of their songs, Kurt telling Krist to shut up, and Dave Grohl looking roughly sixteen years old—it’s all part of the rich tapestry. And if there’s one memento from that show you’d want to own, it’s an old, discolored sweater that probably smells like stale cigarettes.
Now, you can. Rolling Stone reports the green cardigan Kurt Cobain wore for the taping of the MTV program is going up for auction this month, as part of a collection of almost 350 pieces of rock memorabilia in the Julien’s Live event. The hot-ticket item is described as “a blend of acrylic, mohair and Lycra with five-button closure (one button absent), with two exterior pockets, a burn hole and discoloration near left pocket and discoloration on right pocket.” Comfy! And definitely worth the expected $40,000-$60,000 price tag!
It’s not the only piece of rock history hitting the auction block: Other ways you can spend far too much money include a lock of Cobain’s hair for your creepy post-mortem voodoo doll; the drum head used by Ringo Starr on the Beatles’ debut Ed Sullivan Show appearance; John Lennon’s acoustic guitar; Eddie Vedder’s handwritten Pearl Jam lyrics; and a number of items from Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch, including the jacket he wore to Elizabeth Taylor’s wedding. Your family will be so proud when they see you show up to Christmas Eve church services in it, like a true fan.
