Obama to make first-ever presidential prison visit for a Vice special
Fresh off his appearance on WTF With Marc Maron, President Obama is getting into bed with Vice. The commander-in-chief will make the first-ever presidential visit to a prison as part of a Vice special for HBO. The visit to Oklahoma’s El Reno federal prison will happen next week, and will be hosted by Vice founder Shane Smith, who will also visit the prison. The facility holds about 1300 inmates, some of whom will get to meet with the President. In a press release, Smith said that the visit was inspired by “an emerging consensus in this country—on both the right and the left” about how “the way we treat criminal offenders is utterly broken and weakening our society in profound ways.” Smith says he hopes that the visit will “give our viewers a firsthand look into how the president is thinking about this problem, from the policy level down to one-on-one conversations with the men and women living this reality.”
