Octavia Spencer to star in Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming Cold War movie
Octavia Spencer is currently in negotiations to join the cast of Guillermo del Toro’s new Cold War movie, Variety reports. (In related news, Guillermo del Toro apparently has a new Cold War movie in the works.) The upcoming Fox Searchlight project, written, produced, and directed by the Mexican filmmaker, is being described as a fantastical love story set against the political tensions of America in 1963.
Del Toro, who made a name for himself with psychologically satisfying horror stories, like Crimson Peak and Pan’s Labyrinth, is also currently developing an adaptation of Alvin Schwartz’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark trilogy, with a possibility of also serving as director. The untitled period piece seems to be his top priority, though, and will begin shooting this summer with Sally Hawkins (Happy-Go-Lucky, Godzilla) also in the cast.
Spencer (an Oscar winner for The Help) can be seen reprising her role as Amity representative Johanna Reyes in The Divergent Series: Allegiant this weekend, and was recently cast as a NASA mathematician who helped launch John Glenn into space in the upcoming drama Hidden Figures.
