Odd Couple 2
Crowds loved it when Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau played the anal-retentive Felix and slovenly Oscar, respectively, in The Odd Couple, the 1968 film version of Neil Simon's play; the film's success ensured a successful television series and a perpetual theatrical run for the play. The problem with Simon's belated sequel (directed by hack Howard Deutch) isn't the material, and it's not the actors; it's the combination of the two. Lemmon and Matthau remain national treasures, but watching the two yell at each other for the umpteenth time has gotten tiresome. This time around, the two grumpy old men must drive to a wedding together; it seems Oscar's son is marrying Felix's daughter. The gimmick, of course, is that neither character has changed a bit, and they inevitably bicker and get into trouble. Unfortunately, the gags are so slowly set up and so obvious that even the easiest laughs are deflated. The audience half expects each lame joke to be punctuated with the goofy "wah-wah-wah" of a muted trumpet, but the geriatric Odd Couple 2 probably couldn't even muster the breath.
