Of course the Legends Of Tomorrow go to a witch hunt and find a fairy godmother
Here’s what’s happening in the world of television for Monday, October 29. All times are Eastern.
Top pick
DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow (The CW, 9 p.m.): This week in the most consistently entertaining corner of the Arrowverse, the Legends race back to the Salem Witch Trials when they hear the siren song of their magical time seismograph. (This is a wonderful show.) When they get there, they find that the troublemaking magical creature of the week is not a dragon, nor a telepathic gorilla, but a sweet ol’ fairy godmother (character actor Jane Carr). Chaos ensues, because that’s what happens on Legends Of Tomorrow, even when it’s not running a witch trial episode just in time for Halloween.
But Legends, while intoxicatingly silly, is other things besides. Last week’s premiere featured Zari (Tala Ashe), a Muslim woman from a believably dystopian near-future, watching her mother and her younger self on a playground in 2018, confessing how much she wishes she could warn them to flee before “this country that she worked so hard to become a citizen of betrays her.” This week, Captain Sara Lance (Caity Lotz) notices that Zari is more personally invested than usual when she “promises to save a mom who is being accused of being a witch.” We’d bet money that those two things are connected, and that Legends Of Tomorrow will continue to do wacky shit while sneaking in some really smart, thoughtful stuff for good measure. Allison Shoemaker will have her magic wand and thinking cap at the ready.
Regular coverage
Wild card
A Very Wicked Halloween: Celebrating 15 Years On Broadway (NBC, 10:01 p.m.): This isn’t exactly on the level of NBC’s live musicals, but the reunion of Wicked stars Kristin Chenoweth (lately of the delightful Trial & Error) and Idina “Please Don’t Make Me Sing ‘Let It Go’ Again” Menzel is worth a mention. This concert, as you’d guess from the title, celebrates the mega-hit musical’s 15th year on Broadway, and will feature performances from its two original leading ladies, as well as Ariana Grande, Pentatonix, and the current Broadway cast. If you prefer your Halloween-y stuff with fewer grandiose key changes, it would seem that Jennifer Love Hewitt is going to get ghost-whispered on this week’s 9-1-1 (Fox, 9 p.m.), so that’s got to be worth a look. The episode also promises a cemetery, a hay ride, a “spooky Hollywood parade,” and the continued presence of Angela Bassett.
