Oh No: Dr. No's Oxperiment
With the Galt McDermott tribute project Exodus Into Unheard Rhythms and now the international instrumental album Dr. No's Oxperiment, cult rapper/beatsmith Oh No seems to be on a mission to out-weird his legendarily eccentric older brother Madlib. That'd be a perverse, doomed goal if the results weren't so damned winning. Oh No here sprinkles bits of hip-hop boom-bap and weird soundbites from old movies amid blunted soundscapes drawing on the droning, hypnotic native rhythms of a whole bunch of nations under a groove. Drawing smartly on the sounds of Turkey, Lebanon, Greece, and Italy, Oh No proves to be as accomplished in crafting standalone sonic architecture as he is making beats for himself and others.
