Olympic athletes squander years of training on free McDonald’s
Generally, there are two kinds of people in this world: People who get up before dawn every day to push themselves to their physical limits in pursuit of a goal, and people who struggle to make it to McDonald’s in time for the 10:30 a.m. breakfast cutoff. McDonald’s has already taken steps towards serving the latter group with its all-day breakfast menu, and now it’s actively undermining the first by offering free McDonald’s to Olympic athletes and coaches at the Rio 2016 Olympics.
The Washington Post reports from the long, damp line outside of the chain restaurant’s outpost in the Olympic Village, where a lack of options and overwhelming crowds of people at the official Olympic cafeteria has resulted in a perpetual line out the McDoor. The restaurant has even had to instate a 20-item limit for each individual order, not only on account of weightlifters who eat tens of thousands of calories every day as a matter of course, but because of athletes ordering for their entire teams.
As for the obvious question—namely, that it can’t be good to run (or jump, or swim, or…) with a belly full of french fries and chicken sludge—apparently Jamaican superstar runner Usain Bolt ate 100 Chicken McNuggets every day during the Beijing Olympics, and has admitted to eating “a few nuggets” before winning gold in London. So there you go: Work hard, eat 200 chicken McNuggets a day, and you can be twice as fast as Usain Bolt.
